Is color enough to define exceptional jadeite?
Color is usually the first quality the eye encounters. It can be immediate, vivid and emotionally compelling. Yet in the serious appreciation of fine jadeite, color is only the beginning.
A jadeite’s quality must be understood as a whole.
Its translucency determines how deeply light can enter the material. Its texture influences how evenly that light travels through the internal structure. Thickness and proportion affect the stone’s visual depth, presence and balance. None of these qualities exists independently; each one changes the way the others are perceived.
This is why two jadeites may display a seemingly similar green, yet belong to entirely different levels of quality.
One may appear bright only at the surface. Another may hold light within the material, allowing the color to feel deeper, more stable and more alive. Their difference cannot always be explained by a single color description or isolated grading term. It becomes visible through the relationship between color, translucency, texture, thickness, proportion and light.
Light is especially revealing.
We observe how it enters the jadeite, how naturally it moves through the structure, and what it reveals along the way. It may expose density or looseness, clarity or obstruction, depth or flatness. Under movement, these material qualities become even more apparent.
This is why jadeite cannot be judged from color alone, nor reduced to a simple list of specifications. Natural jadeite is not a standardized material. Each piece carries its own internal conditions, and those conditions must be read together.

The finest jadeite is not merely the greenest.
