Most people know the word jade.
Far fewer know that jade is not a single gemstone.
In traditional gemology, the term primarily refers to two distinct mineral materials: jadeite and nephrite.
Despite being known in Chinese as “hard jade” and “soft jade,” their hardness is surprisingly close: jadeite measures approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, while nephrite measures around 6–6.5.
Their mineral compositions, however, are fundamentally different.
Much of China’s ancient jade tradition developed around nephrite. Hetian jade and many traditional white, green and dark jades belong to this broader tradition.
Jadeite — known in Chinese as feicui — is a different mineral material.
It became increasingly prized in China, particularly during the Qing dynasty, and exceptional jadeite would later become closely associated with figures including Empress Dowager Cixi, Empress Wanrong, Oei Hui-lan and Soong Mei-ling.
Today, fine jadeite can achieve extraordinary translucency, exceptionally fine texture, saturated color and a distinctive interaction with light.
But identifying a gemstone as natural jadeite still does not tell us its quality.
Color, translucency, texture, zhongshui, thickness, size, proportion, integrity and light performance must all be considered.
Natural tells us what the material is.
Quality tells us where it stands.
