Carat weight tells us how much a jadeite piece weighs. Its dimensions reveal how that weight is carried.
This Feiyuehui Studios study moves from weight to proportion. A cabochon’s length, width and depth provide a different kind of information from the diameter of a bead or the measurements of a bangle.
Two stones of equal weight may have different face-up appearances and different relationships with light. Thickness is particularly important when comparing their translucency.

Carat weight is an important part of jadeite assessment.
One carat equals 0.2 grams. This gives us a precise and internationally recognized way to record weight and compare different pieces.
The next step is to understand how that weight is distributed.
For a jadeite cabochon, we record length, width, and depth. For a bead, we record diameter. For a bangle, we record inner diameter, band width, and thickness.
Two cabochons may have the same carat weight but very different proportions. One may be broad and shallow, while the other is more compact and deep. This difference changes their face-up appearance and the way light travels through the material.
Thickness is especially important when reading translucency. A thinner piece may transmit light more easily, while a thicker piece requires stronger material quality to achieve a similarly luminous effect.
This is why jadeite is assessed through a combination of carat weight, millimeter dimensions, proportion, color, translucency, texture, and treatment status.
