Why Zhongshui Comes Before Color in Jadeite

Feiyuehui Studios · 翡月荟 · The Jadeite Guide

Study Notes

Color catches the eye. Zhongshui gives that color its material foundation.

In this Feiyuehui Studios study, texture, translucency and the relationship with light establish the starting point for appreciating fine jadeite. Rich color becomes more compelling when supported by a refined underlying material.

The film then considers optical glow and substantial, well-proportioned thickness. These qualities matter through the way they work together, rather than as isolated signs of rarity.

Thickness alone does not settle the question of quality. The study asks how convincingly color, structure, proportion and light remain in balance throughout the stone.

Zhongshui establishes the foundation.
Color finds its expression within it.

Key Observations

  • Zhongshui describes the combined impression of texture, translucency and light.
  • Color alone cannot create the depth associated with exceptional material.
  • Fine zhongshui gives context to the way color is perceived.
  • Optical glow and thickness must be considered alongside structure and proportion.
  • Rarity emerges when demanding material qualities coexist at an exceptional level.

翡翠种水和颜色,先看什么

绿色常常首先吸引目光,但翡翠的种水与质地会影响颜色呈现出的深度和活力。颜色需要放在材料的通透度、结构和厚度中理解。

In fine jadeite, color may be the first thing we notice—but zhongshui establishes the foundation of quality.

Zhongshui describes the combined impression of the material’s internal texture, translucency, and relationship with light. Without this foundation, color alone cannot create the depth, vitality, and refinement associated with exceptional jadeite.

When fine zhongshui is accompanied by rich, even color, the glow-like optical effect often described in the jadeite trade as “fluorescence,” and substantial, well-proportioned thickness, the material becomes significantly rarer.

Thickness is not an independent guarantee of value. It becomes especially important when translucency, color, structure, proportion, and overall finish remain strong.

True jadeite value is never determined by one feature alone. It is created when material qualities come together at an exceptional level.
