Green may be jadeite’s most familiar color, but it is only one part of its natural palette.
This Feiyuehui Studios study looks at green, lavender, red, yellow and colorless jadeite, alongside the soft blue to blue-green appearance described in the trade as Sky Blue.
A color name identifies a family of appearances. Within that family, hue, saturation, distribution, translucency and texture can differ considerably.
The chapter invites us to look beyond the label. Colorless material can be exceptional, while a desirable color alone cannot establish the quality of a particular piece.
Color is a category.
Quality is a judgment.

When people think of jadeite, green is usually the first color that comes to mind.
But jadeite has a far richer natural color spectrum.
In Episode 08 of Feiyuehui Studios, we look at green, lavender, red, yellow and colorless jadeite, as well as the soft blue to blue-green appearance commonly described in the trade as Sky Blue.
But identifying the color is only the beginning.
Two pieces of jadeite belonging to the same color family can differ enormously in hue, saturation, translucency, texture, color distribution and overall material quality.
This is why color should never be read in isolation.
A highly translucent, finely textured colorless jadeite can be an exceptional material. And even a highly desirable color does not, by itself, determine the quality of a piece.
Understanding jadeite requires looking beyond the name of its color and examining the material as a whole.
COLOR IS A CATEGORY.
QUALITY IS A JUDGMENT.
